A

This page describes the simplest way to use Multiple Choice (MC) quizzes - when you feel familiar with their preparation you might like to consider some of the more advanced techniques described here. Quizzes are automatically marked by the system - students get instant feedback and can retake the quiz. Results are stored in the Learning Log for the individual student and there will be a date stamped 'history trail' if several attempts have been made.

B

There are 2 kinds of MC test - one assuming a single correct answer (eg How many wives did Henry VIII have? 4 / 5 / 6) and those with several correct answers (eg Which of these are rainbow colours? red / brown / yellow / black / blue). The first set is referred to here as MCOA (Multiple Choice One Answer); the second is MCMA (Multiple Choice Multiple Answer). The techniques for authoring and using them are essentially the same.

C

To use either kind of MC quiz in a course you must:

D

To author any quiz use PIM>MyCourse>Tutor>Content>Assessments. This time we will choose Multiple Choice.

E

The first 3 choices below relate to Adding a brand new quiz, Editing a quiz name or Deleting a quiz. We will come back to the other choices later.

F

Clicking Add New Question Set leads to the title panel - type an understandable title and press create - avoid use of cryptic titles (eg MC1) because you will forget what they are about.

G

Click and you get a Success message. You will probably go straight on the add new questions - though you could come back and do this later by choosing Edit Existing Question Set at Step E above. Click to continue.

HFor each question you need to have planned how many answers you will give in the Multiple Choice. This might be 2 for a simple Yes / No answer - you would rarely use more than 3 probably. You are not allowed to choose 1 answer only. You cannot change this number later, so planning is important. When you have selected a number click to see the main authoring page.
IType an understandable question into the Question panel and type Correct and Incorrect answer(s) in the other panels. Leave the Question Format set as HTML - you might want to explore the Advanced html Techniques later. Anything you type in the Hint box will appear as a clue after automatic marking if a student gets a question wrong - leave it blank if you wish. Most answers will be awarded the default 1 point each, though you can alter this if you wish. When all panels are complete, click to return to Step H above.
JWhen all questions are finished for the test you can Return to Main Page and use Test Question Set to see how it looks and works. This is also a good opportunity to check that you get full marks if every answer is correct. If not use Edit Question from Existing Question Set at Step E above to go back and make changes.
KFor a MCMA quiz the procedure is almost identical, though the menu pages are different. Choose Create a new question set first.
LType a sensible title (again avoid cryptic names) and click .
MYou can now Add questions, Edit questions and Test the quiz. Click Add a question to this set first.
NAgain you must specify the number of answers you want in advance - and again you cannot alter this later. This time you will probably need 5 or 6 choices with 2 or 3 correct answers in the set. Click when you have chosen.
OThe screen shot below shows only one Answer / Scoring panel - there would in fact be 5 if you had specified 5 answers in Step N. Type a sensible question and for each answer you must type it exactly and then say if it is true. You would award point(s) for a correct answer and can deduct point(s) for wrong answers if you wish. Click when all is ready.
