The following keyboard shortcuts work in Word and the ones marked * work in other MS Office applications and usually across web pages as well.

CTRL key

Hold down the CTRL key and tap the other key once:

CTRL-A

SELECT ALL text etc in a document

CTRL-B

Toggles BOLD text on-off

CTRL-C

COPIES selected text etc

 

CTRL-D

Starts FONT FORMAT routine

 

CTRL-E

Moves text to CENTRE ALIGNED position

CTRL-F

Starts the FIND search routine for current page

 

CTRL-G

Starts a GO TO routine

CTRL-H

Starts the FIND AND REPLACE routine for the current page

CTRL-I

Toggles ITALICS text on-off

 

CTRL-J

 
 

CTRL-K

Starts the INSERT HYPERLINK routine

 

CTRL-L

Moves text to LEFT ALIGNED position

 

CTRL-M

Moves text to next TAB MARKER position

Starts a NEW document

CTRL-O

Starts OPEN DOCUMENT routine

CTRL-P

Starts the PRINT routine

Some use SHIFT, CTRL and ALT in various combinations. They become second nature if you use them frequently.

Keyboard shortcuts - Miscellaneous

The following keyboard shortcuts work in many applications:

ALT key

Hold down the ALT key and tap the other key once:

 

ALT with an alphabet letter links to the menu hyperlinks at the top of any screen - an underlined letter responds to ALT use as if you had clicked the hyperlink. Within subsequent drop-down menus, you simply type the underlined letter to activate the hyperlink.

ALT <

Same as BACK button on a web page or in a table

ALT >

Same as FORWARD button on a web page or in a table

ALT-F4

Closes current live window - could be a web browser window or an open Office document. At the desktop it will begin the Windows Shutdown routine.

F1

Starts the Help routine for your application

F5

Starts the FIND AND REPLACE search routine for current page

F7

Starts the spelling and grammar check

F12

Starts the Save As . . . routine
