This section deals only with Chat
within a course. General Chat (accessed from the
student PIM) can be disabled across the school as described here.
B
Course Chat,
designed by the teacher or by students, could become a key feature of your approach
to course design.
C
It
is essential that students realise that all traffic through the Chat
room is recorded and checked by a teacher. Your school should have an Acceptable
Use Policy for the Learning Platform.
D
We
assume that you have created a course and set up an internal Chapter
structure which includes some content (a document or a web site) which will form
the focus for the Chat discussion.
E
To
set up a Chat discussion thread use PIM>MyCourse>Tutor>Resources>Chat.
As each new course is created a general Chat room
for the course is automatically created. You can set up other Chat
rooms within the course if you wish - for separate Workgroups
perhaps.
F
The
Roster lists all participants currently
on-line; you can hide this list if you wish. You can also
others on-line to come to join in the Chat - this
sends a Pager message to their computer. When a participant
is finished, they can
the Chat room.
G
Messages
are typed into the Message box in the normal way
before clicking .
H
The
teacher set-up page allows control over several monitoring features. The Chat
record can be saved as a text file; files can be automatically deleted after a
specified time; the teacher can view all the current chat messages.
